Recently, CageChain sat down for an interview with Boogie Shack Music Group Founder, Hakim Draper, to discuss some background on the company, the music label’s innovative approach to integrating technology into their business operations and what’s in store for 2021!
CC: WHAT DOES THE BOOGIE SHACK DO?
HD: While our primary focus has been on artist development and education, we have also found ourselves exploring music tech, primarily out of necessity. Everything starts with great songs, so that will always be our foundation. Developing songwriting, matching artists with the right producers and mentors to help them better develop their talent for the commercial market.
CC: YOU MENTIONED EDUCATION, IS THAT A TRADITIONAL EDUACTIONAL PROGRAM?
HD: Our education comes in the form of hands on, real world mentorship and guidance. Through this process we can establish one of the most important foundations of the necessary music business education, rights management. From the moment artists begin creating they also begin creating data. Lyrics, Copyrights, Graphics, related assets, and managing those assets and that data is imperative for artists to both protect and monetize their music.
CC: AND HOW DOES MUSIC TECH FIT IN?
HD: Rights management, administration, and monetization is the first intersection of music and tech that we are exploring. There are so many moving parts that go into monetizing and managing music assets and clean data and metadata is at the foundation of it all. Beyond that we have a project that is leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning within both the catalog/rights and music engagement & consumption spaces.
CC: IS THERE AN ADVANTAGE TO AN ECOSYSTEM THIS?
HD: The Boogie Shack is designed to look for creative new solutions to the everyday challenges that artists continue to face. One of the unique benefits of developing music tech & artists/songs is that we often can test the efficacy of these applications, concepts, and technologies as part of breaking new artists campaigns thus providing proof of concept, providing a test case, and setting the foundation for white papers, future development, and even marketing strategies. The other advantage is that we are able to address unique challenges in new technologies first in a controlled environment.

CC: ANY EARLY SUCESSES?
HD: We launched The Boogie Shack in 2016. Since then, we have put just under $500k directly into independent and emerging artists pockets. Revenue that they were able to generate through music licensing, streaming, and unique brand partnerships. This is pre-tour revenue as we were scheduled to begin tackling early stage live touring in 2019 with the announcement of a major partnership. While that has been delayed, we have also identified some other very interesting individual artist success stories through some of our cryptocurrency endeavors. The thing that we are most excited about are the next ‘class’ of artist coming out this year.
